Easy Foil Paper Technique You Have To Try Now!

This technique went over HUGE with the team at the last meeting.  Everyone wanted to know how it was done and when I told them, they were floored at how easy it was!  Their reactions told me I had to share it with you, friends.

Here it is, the Sanded Foil Technique:
  • Place a piece of foil in your favorite embossing folder and run it through a die-cut and embossing machine.
  • Place the foil on your desk/table.
  • Use fine grit sandpaper or a nail filing block (I found mine at the dollar store) to gently rub it across the foil paper.
  • The raised parts of the foil from the embossing will make contact with the sandpaper/filing block and the color will be removed.

That simple removal of color creates this gorgeous metallic variegated effect.  And it takes just seconds with a $1 item!  The above card uses Noble Peacock foil, Noble Peacock Rhinestones, the Timeless Tropical Bundle, Tropical Oasis Designer Series Paper, and Coastal Weave 3D Embossing Folder.  I also used Soft Sea Foam and Lovely Lipstick cardstock.

This card uses Black Foil with the Painted Poppies bundle and Peaceful Poppies Designer Series Paper.

The sentiment is from Itty Bitty Greetings.  Use a Chalk Marker to add small dots to the poppy centers - it makes them stand out from the background.

In my Tuesday Happy Half Hour Facebook Live class, I demonstrated this technique.  It's the first card in the video and I jump into at 1:00.  Click the picture to watch that video.

2 Cool Tricks To Stretch Your Stamping Supplies and Make a Triple Impact PLUS a video

Your crafting supplies and tools are investments.  Fun investments, to be sure, but still something that you want to get the most use from.  Any time I discover a new way to use something I already own is a HAPPY time!  It makes me do cartwheels!  And today, I have 2 ideas to share with you that will help you s-t-r-e-t-c-h your supplies.

Trick #1: Stamp your image three times on a 3" wide piece of cardstock, then use your Stampin' Trimmer to cut into 3 equal 1" wide sections.  For maximum impact, mat each 1" section onto a 1-1/4" wide cardstock mat.  The triple repetition is a stunning eye-catcher!

In my example, I stamped an image from Painted Poppies in Memento Tuxedo Black Ink on Whisper White cardstock, then used Stampin' Blends to color them (Light & Dark Poppy Parade, Light & Dark Mossy Meadow).

Trick #2: While you have your Stampin' Blends out, use them to custom color ribbon!   Lay the ribbon flat on Stampin' Grid paper to protect your work surface, then run the brush tip of the Stampin' Blend marker down the ribbon.  The color will transfer instantly and smoothly and also dry quickly.

The ribbon in my example is Whisper White Crinkled Seam Binding and I used a Dark Poppy Parade Stampin' Blend on it. Look at the vibrancy of that ribbon!  One spool of Whisper White Crinkled Seam Binding Ribbon + your favorite Stampin' Blends colors = a rainbow of options!

Here's a Behind-The-Scenes story that you probably can relate to: I faced major indecision over what color to stamp the background on the Real Red cardbase.  At first, I was going to use the same color ink so that the background would be subtle.  But then I thought how striking stamping it in Tuxedo Black would be, especially with the Basic Black mats.  No joke, I spent 10 minutes  going back-and-forth over this!  I violated my own design rule of NO OVERTHINKING.  Finally, I scolded myself for doubting my instinct (and wasting precious stamp time) and went with the Tuxedo Black - and LOVED it!!

Watch the video to see this card made from start to finish.

Splitcoaststampers Card Sketch Challenge

Emma went back to school this past Sunday and that was harder than when we dropped her off in August for her first semester as a freshman.  Why is that?  Is it because back in August she still felt like "mine" and our home was still 100% her home since that's all she'd known?  And now she's developed another home where her "real" life is now and it gives me a bittersweet feeling?  The leaving this time felt more like cutting the apron strings than last summer.  No matter the why, I just know I miss her so much!

Splitcoaststampers Card Sketch Challenge 784

I dove into making a card for this week's Splitcoaststampers Sketch Challenge to take my mind off my oldest girl's absence.  As soon as I saw the sketch, what jumped into my mind was how perfect it is for showing off gorgeous Designer Series Paper (DSP).

Stampin' Up!'s Painted Poppies set with Peaceful Poppies Designer Series Paper and Sending You Thoughts free Sale-A-Bration set | by Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper

The colors of this particular piece from the Peaceful Poppies DSP pack caught my eye and I had to pull out some Pool Party and Poppy Parade cardstock to get playing!

Technique tip: use blender pen to fill in stamped background | Stampin' Up!'s Painted Poppies used here | by Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper

An easy technique that adds a soft, subtle, but very interesting detail is to use a blender pen to color stamped images.  Stamp your image in any color (Poppy Parade ink with an image from Painted Poppies used here), then use a blender pen to pull that color around the image.  Be careful not to overwork the paper, though, or it will pill (ball up into little fuzzies, just like a sweater).  I like to quickly color in circles when doing this technique.

Layer stamped poppies on Stampin' Up!'s Peaceful Poppies Elements piece

These poppy and leaf images are from the Painted Poppies set.  I filled them in with Poppy Parade and Old Olive inks using the solid wash and splatter images from that set.  The Painted Labels dies were used to cut out all the images.  Everything was layered on a black embossed circle from a Peaceful Poppies Elements pack (featured in my Facebook Live yesterday).

The sentiment is from the free Sale-A-Bration set Sending You Thoughts.  I stamped in Versamark, sprinkled with White Stampin' Emboss Powder, then melted with a Heat Tool.  I trimmed it close with Paper Snips to allow more of the colorful poppies to show.
