Double Embossed Shaker Card + Stampin' Up! Year-End Close-Out Sale

I saw Wendy Cranford of Luvin' Stampin' use this double embossing technique on a shaker card and LOVED it!!

for unto us, shaker cards, christmas cards, how to make a card, stampin' up!, papercrafting, nicole steele, independent stampin' up! demonstrator, the joyful stamper, pittsburgh pa

Here are the two embossing techniques:
  1. Place a 4"x5-1/4" piece of Vellum cardstock in the embossing folder (Winter Snow used here) and run it through a die-cut machine.  Remove the vellum from the folder and admire the pure white of the embossed snowflakes!
  2. Press an ink pad on the inside of the same embossing folder used in the first technique (I used Real Red).  Press it on the side that has the Stampin' Up! logo.  Lay a 4"x5-1/4" piece of Whisper White cardstock on the non-inked side, close the folder, and run it through your die-cut machine.  Remove the cardstock and clean the folder with a baby wipe or by running it under water.  The cardstock will be Real Red in the debossed areas and the embossed/raised snowflakes will be white.  Very pretty look!

To make the shaker card, first glue the inked embossed piece to a 5-1/2"x8-1/2" Thick Whisper White card base.

Next, nest 2 Rectangle Stitched Dies on a 5-3/8"x4-1/8" piece of Whisper White cardstock and run it through a die-cut machine.  This creates the frame.  Glue the embossed vellum to the back of the frame.

Now apply Foam Adhesive Strips on the back side of the frame, along the inside edge.  Make sure there are no gaps (gaps will allow your shaker pieces to fall out and we don't want that).

Put a couple pinches of Sequins For Everything on the card base (these no-hole sequins are SO fun to use in shaker cards!).

Remove the liner from the Foam Adhesive Strips and attach that panel to the card base.  Press firmly along all four sides to create a tight seal.  That's it!  Have fun shaking your card and hearing the sequins rattle!

Easy Background Technique with Embossing Folders

On my weekly Facebook Live class a couple weeks ago, I played around with the Bricks & Mortar 3D Embossing Folder.  I LOVE the look that resulted!  Check it out!

posted for you, bricks embossing folder, postage punch, stampin' up!, white craft ink, how to make a card, learn to stamp, hobbies, nicole steele, independent stampin' up! demonstrator, the joyful stamper, pittsburgh pa

After embossing a 4"x5-1/4" piece of Misty Moonlight cardstock, I lightly dragged a Whisper White Craft Pad across it.  The ink pad brushed the raised portion of the cardstock, creating this gorgeous whitewashed brick wall!

This is a pretty card that doesn't take a long time to make, either.  Follow the recipe below:
  • Cut a 5-1/2"x8-1/2" card base from Misty Moonlight cardstock.  Fold in half at 4-1/4".
  • Cut a 4"x5-1/4" piece of Misty Moonlight cardstock.  Run through Stampin' Cut & Emboss machine with Bricks & Mortar 3D Embossing Folder.
  • Lightly drag a Whisper White Craft Ink Pad across the embossed piece.  Glue to card base.
  • Stamp images from Posted For You - Balmy Blue ink on Balmy Blue cardstock and Petal Pink ink on Petal Pink cardstock.
  • Punch images with Rectangular Postage Stamp Punch.  Glue to card with Stampin' Dimensionals.
  • Stamp sentiment on Whisper White cardstock in Misty Moonlight ink.  Trim and adhere to card with Stampin' Dimensionals.
  • Use Dark Pool Party Stampin' Blends to color Basics Pearls.  Add to card.

This is the second card I taught.  It uses a clever Cut & Tuck trick to slip in a 1-3/4"x4" piece of your favorite Designer Series Paper (Plaid Tidings was used here).  Jump to the 15:00 mark of my Live and you'll see how to make the cut that lets you slip in the patterned paper.  I love how the Bricks & Mortar 3D Embossing Folder adds a masculine feel to this birthday card.  Stamp and punch a couple hearts using the Heartfelt Bundle (sentiment is from Posted For You), add Misty Moonlight Ribbon, and you've got a fun card to mail!

See the fall version of this Cut & Tuck trick (with written directions) here.

Saturday Sketch + Embossed Tile Technique

Hello, friends!  This embossed tile technique is SO simple and SO beautiful, anyone can do it!  I featured it in my weekly Facebook Live class, The Happy Half Hour, this past Tuesday.

Splitcoaststampers card sketch challenge 803 nicole steele the joyful stamper stampin' up!

It began with this sketch from Splitcoaststampers.  All I saw when I looked at this was squares of Designer Series Paper (DSP).  What a fantastic opportunity to use up those scraps, right?

parisian beauty designer series paper ornate garden 3d embossing folder parisian dies stampin' up! nicole steele the joyful stamper

Since Parisian Blossoms DSP is retiring June 2 and it's a favorite of mine, I pulled it out.  I cut (3) 1" x 12" strips, then trimmed those strips into 1" squares.  If you have a die or punch in that size, go ahead and use them instead.

Glue the squares to a 5-1/2" x 4-1/4" piece of cardstock (Cherry Cobbler used here) and don't worry about getting the spacing perfect.  Look closely at my card and you'll see that mine aren't perfect.  It's ok!

But let's not stop there - let's emboss that finished piece!  After the DSP squares are glued on to the cardstock, place that panel in an embossing folder (I used Ornate Garden 3D) and run it through your die-cutting & embossing machine.  The subtle texture and pattern it adds is stunning!

But let's not stop there, either!  Pull out some Champagne Mist Shimmer Paint and dip an Aqua Painter or paintbrush in the jar.  Hold it over that embossed piece and smack it near the brush end with a bone folder.  Do you see the little flecks?  In person, they shimmer and sparkle!  So pretty!  Plus, it's fun to whack that Aqua Painter and watch the mist splatter everywhere.

The metal key charm from Bird Ballad Trinkets (also retiring June 2) was the perfect embellishment for this DSP.  I tied it on with some twine wrapped twice around the card base.

The "merci" was die-cut twice using Parisian Dies, once with Champagne Foil and once with Basic Black cardstock, then glued with a Fine-Tip Glue Pen, slightly off-set.

Two scraps of Very Vanilla Scalloped Lace Trim were tied into the Petal Pink Metallic Edge Ribbon bow.

I adore the details of this card and how all the simple touches add up to one fancy project!  You could make this!

A Giant Pineapple!

It's amazing what a walk on a sunny day can do to lift one's spirits.  I got up yesterday and was fine really but the need to MOVE was strong!  So I leashed up Lily and off we went, making a pit stop at my parents' home (just over a mile from us).  I talked to my dad and grandmother for a long while.  By the time Lily and I returned home, my mind was energized and I felt like the world was my oyster and anything was possible!  My eyelashes would suddenly be longer, thicker, and darker!  My house would have dusted itself!  Consuming chocolate everyday would turn out to be great for my waistline!

The walk was a good one.

And so is this card!  But I can't take credit for the original idea.  I found it on page 11 of the Sale-A-Bration brochure, in the bottom right corner.

Hello, Pineapple card cased from Sale-A-Bration catalog with Tropical Oasis suite

If you think every project you make has to be 100% your own idea, stop with that thought!  Stampin' Up! packs its catalogs with beautiful samples for all skill levels and styles of stampers.  It's okay - and encouraged - to make something exactly like you see it!  I changed just two things on this card - the sentiment and the color of the flower - and that was only because I needed a "hello" card and I had a Grapefruit Grove ink pad sitting on my desk.  Let's focus on the details and at the end you'll find a tutorial to download for your personal use.

Hello, Pineapple card cased from Sale-A-Bration catalog with Tropical Oasis suite

The background is the stunning Coastal Weave 3D Embossing Folder.  Tip: to get a deeper impression, lightly spritz your cardstock with water before running it through a die-cutting machine.

After it was embossed, I used a Stampin' Sponge to lightly rub Soft Suede ink across it.  The raised parts of the embossed pattern pick up the ink from the sponge while the more recessed areas do not get inked.  It's such a FUN look!

The pineapple top and bottom and flower dies are found in the In The Tropics dies set.  Before die-cutting the flower, I stamped the image from Timeless Tropical in Grapefruit Grove ink.  Tip: use a bone folder to gently curl the pineapple top's leaves to give it more interest.

I added a striped sequin from the Metallic Baker's Twine & Sequins Combo Pack, a free Sale-A-Bration item.

"Hello" was stamped on So Saffron cardstock in Pear Pizzazz ink, then trimmed with Paper Snips.

White Christmas or Tropical Christmas?

Are you anticipating a white Christmas or a more tropical one?  We're stuck in the middle.  Last week, we had beautiful soft, fat snowflakes swirling but the forecast for Christmas Day is almost 50 degrees!  That seems wrong.  Maybe I'll turn the furnace off to put a little chill in the air.  No one will complain, I'm sure of it!

Timeless Tropical card using Tropical Oasis DSP, In The Tropics dies, and Coastal Weave embossing folder | by Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper

Well, if you're having a white Christmas and you don't want one, I made a Timeless Tropical card just for you!  It's a new set in Stampin' Up!'s Mini Catalog that becomes available January 3 (you'll be at my Catalog Launch Party on Facebook, right?).  There are a TON of colors in the Tropical Oasis Designer Series Paper - I pulled Grapefruit Grove, Soft Sea Foam, Daffodil Delight, and Soft Suede for this card.

TImeless Tropical card color combination: grapefruit grove, soft suede, soft sea foam, daffodil delight | Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper
The coordinating In The Tropics dies are amazing!  I don't usually buy dies that are so specific to a stamp set, but these dies have a giant and mini pineapple, "aloha", the palm trees, and tons of little palm leaves and flowers that I found impossible to resist.

Timeless Tropical card using Tropical Oasis DSP, In The Tropics dies, and Coastal Weave embossing folder | by Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper

Some tips for this card:

  • Die-cut three "aloha"s and use Fine-Tip Glue to stack and adhere.  It makes it stand out more.  Add the glue to the bottom die-cut, not the one you are laying on top.  You won't get glue on your fingers doing it this way.
  • The Coastal Weave 3D Embossing Folder adds so much to this card!  I embossed both the Grapefruit Grove and Soft Sea Foam layers.  More is more in my book!
  • That teeny Daffodil Delight flower is from the center of the die-cut flowers on my card.  It's so cute!  I used Fine-Tip Glue to adhere it.
I can't wait for you to see this Mini Catalog!  This is just a teaser of all the good to come.

I'm inviting you to my Catalog Launch Party!

Lilypad Lake Serenity

Serenity now!  Anyone else remember that Seinfeld episode?  Seinfeld was truly "must-see TV" for me on Thursday nights in the nineties.

Thinking of You cards are ones I always like to have in my stash as they can be used for pretty much every occasion.  The colors used here (Pool Party, So Saffron, and Blushing Bride) create a serene and calm mood that pairs perfectly with the images in the Lilypad Lake stamp set.  My monthly stamp group should enjoy creating this card tomorrow when we meet.  I will be opening up spots in that monthly stamp group soon, so watch for my announcement!  You'll want to join us for the fun and friendship AND to build your own card stash.

Tips and Tricks:
  • Warm up cooler colors by adding a touch of gold (notice the Gold Cord tied vertically on my card).
  • Add interest to a cardstock panel by tearing the top portion away, as I did with my sentiment piece.
You Can Make It!
  • Cardstock: Pool Party, So Saffron, Blushing Bride, Whisper White
  • Lilypad Lake stamp set
  • Lakeside dies
  • So Saffron ink pad
  • Memento Black ink pad
  • Gold cord
  • Seaside embossing folder
  • Stitched Shapes dies
