Splitcoaststampers Sketch Challenge 781

It's that beautiful time between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day - real life seems suspended and there's a relaxing departure from the normal routine.  My girls are home from school and Brian is off work until January 2.  We "play" with our new Christmas toys, watch movies, eat cookies and cinnamon rolls as a meal, take long walks, attend shows....anything and everything out of the ordinary for us!  I even painted my nails since there's no housework to be done!

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, too!

One part of the normal routine that is still here this week (and next week) is the Splitcoaststampers Sketch Challenge.

Splitcoaststampers Sketch Challenge 781

It's a nice, clean layout that is perfect for showing off a larger stamp or sentiment, or for creating a scene, like I did for my card.

Stampin' Up! Timeless Tulips birthday card | January-June 2020 Mini Catalog sneak peek | card by Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper

I used Timeless Tulips and the Tulip Builder Punch, both available January 3 in Stampin' Up!'s Mini Catalog (read below for how to get your copy).  I stamped the large tulip in Highland Heather ink on Highland Heather cardstock.  The leaves were inked up with Pear Pizzazz and stamped on Pear Pizzazz cardstock.  Both images were punched out using the Tulip Builder Punch.

Don't you love that sweet little "happy birthday"?  It's so dainty and pretty!

Stampin' Up! Timeless Tulips birthday card | January-June 2020 Mini Catalog sneak peek | card by Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper

Using Stampin' Dimensionals for adhesive allowed me to tuck the tulips and leaves behind and around each other.  I love how it makes it feel like they are growing at different heights and in different directions, just like in nature.  I have zero gardening skills and zero desire to learn how to garden, so I am very happy for this stamp set and punch!  No watering required 😄

White Christmas or Tropical Christmas?

Are you anticipating a white Christmas or a more tropical one?  We're stuck in the middle.  Last week, we had beautiful soft, fat snowflakes swirling but the forecast for Christmas Day is almost 50 degrees!  That seems wrong.  Maybe I'll turn the furnace off to put a little chill in the air.  No one will complain, I'm sure of it!

Timeless Tropical card using Tropical Oasis DSP, In The Tropics dies, and Coastal Weave embossing folder | by Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper

Well, if you're having a white Christmas and you don't want one, I made a Timeless Tropical card just for you!  It's a new set in Stampin' Up!'s Mini Catalog that becomes available January 3 (you'll be at my Catalog Launch Party on Facebook, right?).  There are a TON of colors in the Tropical Oasis Designer Series Paper - I pulled Grapefruit Grove, Soft Sea Foam, Daffodil Delight, and Soft Suede for this card.

TImeless Tropical card color combination: grapefruit grove, soft suede, soft sea foam, daffodil delight | Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper
The coordinating In The Tropics dies are amazing!  I don't usually buy dies that are so specific to a stamp set, but these dies have a giant and mini pineapple, "aloha", the palm trees, and tons of little palm leaves and flowers that I found impossible to resist.

Timeless Tropical card using Tropical Oasis DSP, In The Tropics dies, and Coastal Weave embossing folder | by Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper

Some tips for this card:

  • Die-cut three "aloha"s and use Fine-Tip Glue to stack and adhere.  It makes it stand out more.  Add the glue to the bottom die-cut, not the one you are laying on top.  You won't get glue on your fingers doing it this way.
  • The Coastal Weave 3D Embossing Folder adds so much to this card!  I embossed both the Grapefruit Grove and Soft Sea Foam layers.  More is more in my book!
  • That teeny Daffodil Delight flower is from the center of the die-cut flowers on my card.  It's so cute!  I used Fine-Tip Glue to adhere it.
I can't wait for you to see this Mini Catalog!  This is just a teaser of all the good to come.

Being a Busy Little Stamper Part 2

I LOVE papercrafting!  Really LOVE it!  Rebecca Sower, my favorite scrapbooker (although she stopped publicly scrapbooking years ago), once commented she loves to "pop the cork on my creativity".  That is exactly what it feels like to stamp.  The myriad ways to combine colors, textures, images, and embellishments is exciting and there are NO rules.  It's encouraged to play and experiment.  If something comes out not to your liking, you can either salvage it or toss it.  And when you're done, you can pass it along to someone to share the love.  It's like that saying about firewood warming a person twice: once when one chops it and again when one burns it.  In stamping, the project brings you happiness twice: once when you make it and again when you gift it.

Stampin' Up!'s Sweetly Stitched dies with Let It Snow designer series paper | card by Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper

These are the second batch of my cards from Splitcoaststampers' Virtual Stamp Night last weekend.  I was "popping the cork on my creativity" last weekend!

What I love about the stars card: the black stitching done on a sewing machine; the Stitched So Sweetly scalloped rectangular dies (coming January 3); the bright burst of Coastal Cabana enamel stars; the curl of the gold cord (only $2.40 in the Clearance Rack)!

Snow globe scene with Stampin' Up!'s Buffalo Check and Perfectly Plaid | shaker card by Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper

This is a shaker card.  I used Window Sheets and Foam Adhesive Sheets to create the shaker part.  The Buffalo Check background stamp was inked up with Merry Merlot and stamped on Merry Merlot cardstock.

Snow globe scene with Buffalo Check and Perfectly Plaid

I filled the shaker with Ice Stampin' Glitter and some Frosted Sequins (retired).  To prevent the shaker elements from sticking to the Window Sheet, I swiped an Embossing Buddy on it.  The trees are from Perfectly Plaid and stamped in Mossy Meadow ink.  The night sky is Night of Navy ink applied with a Sponge Brayer.  Don't you love the white stars/snowflakes?  Those were made with a Chalk Marker!

Stampin' Up!' Leaf Punch wreath with Toile Tidings and Toile Tidings Glitter Enamel Dots | Christmas card by Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper

I have a couple photos to show you how I made the wreath on the Toile Christmas card above using a Layering Circle die, Leaf punch, and a pencil.

How to make a wreath on your card: Trace Stampin' Up! Layering Circle die on to paper | photo tutorial by Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper

Use a pencil to trace around a Layering Circle die (any size circle will work) directly on the paper on which you'll be building your wreath.

How to make a wreath on a card: arrange punched leaves around traced circle | photo tutorial by Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper

Arrange the punched leaves around the traced circle.  My leaf punches covered the penciled circle so there was nothing to erase.  Once I had the arrangement I liked, I used a piece of Glad Press 'N Seal to pick it up.  Apply adhesive to the back of the punched pieces while they're still on the Press 'N Seal, then lay it back down on your card, gently removing the Press 'N Seal.

See a photo tutorial of the Press 'N Seal technique.

When was the last time you "popped the cork on your creativity"?  It's SO much fun!!!

In The Christmas Spirit

Enjoying and savoring the moment I'm in has been instrumental in increasing my delight in life.  It also has caused my perception of time's passing to slow.  You'll probably never hear me say, "I can't believe it's December already" or a version of that.  This enjoying of the moment has not come easily to me - I've prayed my way to it for years - nor does it stay without a daily renewing of my mind.  But the joy is worth it!

All that to say, I'm ready to celebrate Christmas.  Yes, I've been making Christmas projects for over a month but that was out of necessity.  Whipping out 60 cards in a day or two isn't happening in my world!  But it's a week before Christmas, which is my signal to wrap gifts and that's what "kicks off" the holidays for me.  I'm all-in now!  Cue the carols!  This Friday, Caitlin and I start our annual 1000-piece Christmas puzzle and I'm really excited about it.  What "kicks off" Christmas for you?  Leave me a comment because I'd love to know.

Splitcoaststampers Sketch Challenge 780

Now that I'm in the Christmas spirit, I thought I'd make a birthday card!  That made no sense at all, except for the fact that each year, I gift my Grandma a stack of birthday cards with a roll of stamps.  She loves mailing out my cards and I love creating them for her.  I used this week's Splitcoaststampers Sketch to make today's project.

birthday card using Stampin' Up! balloon bouquet punch, Birthday Backgrounds, and Perennial Birthdays | Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper

Two versatile, go-to sets on my stamp shelf are Birthday Backgrounds and Perennial Birthdays.  Birthday Backgrounds is perfect for creating backgrounds, adding a little something to balance out a card, or to draw the eye to the focal point (as I did in the card above).

birthday card using Stampin' Up! balloon bouquet punch, Birthday Backgrounds, and Perennial Birthdays | Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper

Perennial Birthdays has birthday sentiments in my favorite font.  They're also the perfect size - not too big, not too little.  I used the Balloon Bouquet punch with Bird Ballad Designer Series Paper (the stripes are so fun!) to create a celebratory trio.  The strings are handdrawn with a journaling pen.  I love the shape of the Stitched Nested Labels dies - it's so different from the usual circle/square/rectangle.

You can find the supplies for this card in my online store:
