Saturday Sketch + Embossed Tile Technique

Hello, friends!  This embossed tile technique is SO simple and SO beautiful, anyone can do it!  I featured it in my weekly Facebook Live class, The Happy Half Hour, this past Tuesday.

Splitcoaststampers card sketch challenge 803 nicole steele the joyful stamper stampin' up!

It began with this sketch from Splitcoaststampers.  All I saw when I looked at this was squares of Designer Series Paper (DSP).  What a fantastic opportunity to use up those scraps, right?

Since Parisian Blossoms DSP is retiring June 2 and it's a favorite of mine, I pulled it out.  I cut (3) 1" x 12" strips, then trimmed those strips into 1" squares.  If you have a die or punch in that size, go ahead and use them instead.

Glue the squares to a 5-1/2" x 4-1/4" piece of cardstock (Cherry Cobbler used here) and don't worry about getting the spacing perfect.  Look closely at my card and you'll see that mine aren't perfect.  It's ok!

But let's not stop there - let's emboss that finished piece!  After the DSP squares are glued on to the cardstock, place that panel in an embossing folder (I used Ornate Garden 3D) and run it through your die-cutting & embossing machine.  The subtle texture and pattern it adds is stunning!

But let's not stop there, either!  Pull out some Champagne Mist Shimmer Paint and dip an Aqua Painter or paintbrush in the jar.  Hold it over that embossed piece and smack it near the brush end with a bone folder.  Do you see the little flecks?  In person, they shimmer and sparkle!  So pretty!  Plus, it's fun to whack that Aqua Painter and watch the mist splatter everywhere.

The metal key charm from Bird Ballad Trinkets (also retiring June 2) was the perfect embellishment for this DSP.  I tied it on with some twine wrapped twice around the card base.

The "merci" was die-cut twice using Parisian Dies, once with Champagne Foil and once with Basic Black cardstock, then glued with a Fine-Tip Glue Pen, slightly off-set.

Two scraps of Very Vanilla Scalloped Lace Trim were tied into the Petal Pink Metallic Edge Ribbon bow.

I adore the details of this card and how all the simple touches add up to one fancy project!  You could make this!

SECOND Mystery Stamping Hour This Friday!

We're playing again this Friday night and it's an all-new mystery project!  While Mystery Stamping Hour will normally be a monthly event, I was too excited about this Friday's project to wait that long!  When you see the supplies list Thursday morning, you'll understand why I thought it was fun.

Mystery Stamping Hour with The Joyful Stamper | Friday May 29, 2020 at 8 PM ET | Join the Facebook group Mystery Stamping With The Joyful Stamper

What is Mystery Stamping?
It's an hour of fun and intrigue.  You bring the stamping supplies and I'll post the instructions one step at a time.  The catch is that you won't know what we're making until the last step.  After the last step, everyone posts a photo of their creation.  It's wild to see how others interpret the steps with their stash.

How do you register and what does it cost?
It costs nothing!  This event is SO fun that I've made it free to everyone!  I want you to be there, having a great time.  There is no need to register, either.  Just join the Facebook group Mystery Stamping Hour with The Joyful Stamper and then be there at 8 PM ET this Friday May 22.  That's 5 PT, 6 MT, and 7 CT.

What should I "bring"?
2 days before the Mystery Stamping Hour I'll post a supplies list in the Facebook group and on my blog.  I'll also send an email out to those on my Stampin' News subscriber list (not on it?  Sign up here and get a free pdf of a beautiful exclusive card as my thank you).

Facebook Live - In Color Comparison, Embossed Tile Technique, & a Super Simple Card

I'm super excited about today's projects!  One features a beautiful trick with embossing folders and the other a cute way to showcase the rainbow of new In Colors.

Every Tuesday at 2 PM ET I go live on The Joyful Stamper Facebook Page.  Everyone is invited - those of you curious about stamping, new to stamping, experienced at stamping, or already a Stampin' Up! demonstrator!  After the live is over, I'll post the replay and project sheet below.

Tea Together

Hello, friends!  How was your weekend?  Yesterday I suggested an activity that is not the norm for me - hiking.  Hiking = bugs swarming my head, sticky heat, and itchy plants.  Nothing about that is fun.  But I didn't want to be boring, so asked my family if they wanted to go for a hike.  Emma and Brian said yes; Alaina and Caitlin think like me and, therefore, said no.  So it was just Emma, Brian, and I that trekked through the woods.

Surprise!  I enjoyed it!  It was hot but the trees kept it shaded and bearable.  The bugs were almost non-existent.  And it was nice to have exclusive time with our oldest.  It was like the first 22 months of her life, when it was just the 3 of us before the sisters began arriving.  Only now she's 19 and has a much more expanded vocabulary.  And I didn't have to carry her.  Instead, she had to carry me!

Life is full of sweet, simple moments, isn't it?  A cup of tea is a sweet, simple moment, just like a hike with the husband and oldest girl.  This Tea Together stamp set and Tea Time Dies are two retiring items I've adored!  The images are classics and, when paired with the gingham pattern in the 6"x6" DSP packs, remind me of my grandma's kitchen.

I have the card recipe at the end of this post (plus there's another Mystery Stamping Hour this Friday!).  But notice the watercolored rose.  I stamped both the tea pot and flower on Shimmery White Cardstock, which is great for watercoloring.  I used Mint Macaron and Lovely Lipstick Stampin' Write Markers to color directly on the red rubber of the rose stamp, huffed on it to re-wet the ink, then stamped it on the paper.  Because the marker ink is water-based, I was able to use an Aqua Painter to blend out the ink.  Going over the stamped image with the wet brush caused the ink to bleed just enough to create a watercolor look.  It's a very simple technique so give it a try!

Card Sketch #SC802

Mystery Stamping Hour was a hit last night!  Thank you to all who played.  If you couldn't be there in the Facebook group last night, I'm having another next Friday May 29 at 8 PM ET.  It's free and you'll love it!

Today's card has a mix of old and new elements.  It's incredibly fun to rummage through stamping supplies that haven't seen love in a long while.  It's like looking at a box of photos taken a decade or more ago and being delightfully surprised at the memories you'd temporarily forgotten.

Splitcoaststampers card sketch | #SC802 | Nicole Steele The Joyful Stamper | sketch challenges

My card began with this week's Splitcoaststampers card sketch.  The panels labelled 3 are layered over the panel labelled 2.  The beauty of this sketch is that it can be kept clean and simple with a strong background, or it can be dressed up with distressed and sponged layers and lots of embellishments.

watercolor wings | butterflies | stampin up | thinking of you card | splitcoaststampers | card sketch | card sketch challenge | sc802

I stuck to mostly simple.  Showing off the retiring Peaceful Poppies Designer Series Paper (DSP) was my objective.  The Sparkle Glimmer Paper pairs beautifully with the Blackberry Bliss in the DSP.  My sentiment, die-cut and punched butterflies, and pearls are from my retired stash but I list current product below that will allow you to still make this.

Here's the card recipe, so you can make it, too:

Directions for cutting the DSP diagonally:
  • cut paper to 4-1/4" x 4"
  • measure 1" down the right long (4-1/4") side and mark with a pencil
  • measure 2-1/2" down the left long (4-1/4") side and mark with a pencil
  • Place paper in trimmer with both pencil marks aligned in the trimmer track (the paper will be diagonal in your trimmer).
  • Cut the paper.
